St. John's Storytelling Festival Starts November 3

From November 3 – 8th, 2009, The St. John's Storytelling Festival celebrates of the art and tradition of storytelling. Storytellers from around the city, across the island and farther away gather to share stories. Come along and see why storytelling is one of our most entertaining and enduring forms of expression.

"Storytelling is such an important part of the culture of Newfoundland and Labrador," says Dale Jarvis, festival president. "This year, we wanted to showcase our exciting local storytellers, ballad singers, and recitationists. We wanted to emphasize that this is still a living tradition, that telling stories is still something that we do."

Activities include fun and inspiring workshops, free events, and stories of every shape and size for every age. Highlights include a Tall Tale Competition at the Ship hosted by Stephen Lush. Thursday will be an evening with our younger storytellers at Gower Street United Church Hall and after, it’s over to Quidi Vidi Brewery for a few late night tales. Five Minute Friday, hosted by Anita Best, features a cabaret of the most entertaining stories and storytellers from around here. Saturday evening is devoted to tales from Ireland. With host Fergus O’Byrne Mike Burns, Mary-Eileen McClear and Katherine Grier, it will be a night of imagination and delight. Evening concerts take place at Gower Street United Church; admission is $10 at the door.
