Stories from Here and Away was an absolutely charming evening, and with tea and treats and Kelly Russell's informal, friendly hosting it was more like a gathering of friends than a performance.
After a short introduction and musical selection from Kelly, Marc Cormier took the stage with a scary story that made us all jump, and followed up with a Jack tale (see below).
Kelly then introduced Petronella Van Dijk to the stage and performed another brief selection before Petronella shared two stories of two very different kings.
The final teller for the evening was Clare Muireann Murphy, and when she took the stage after her brief introduction I was curious as to why Kelly hadn't played any music in her introduction. It turns out it was because she and Kelly had incorporated his music into her first story of a gypsy and his fiddle. She finished with a story about an old man who entertained Death with stories, and tale of how a storyteller came out on top made a perfect end to the evening.
Usually, the Storytelling Festival would end there, with a Saturday night performance, but this year we have bonus storytelling with an Epic Jack Cycle this evening at the Ship.
I'm sure you have all heard stories of Jack, the hapless lad who is always getting himself into one sort of trouble or another but always gets out of it either by his own cleverness, by sheer luck or with the help of a magical creature or some sort (Marc Cormier's Jack had help from a magic bee, for example.). Tonight, you'll be hearing all about him in Newfoundland and Labrador's first epic telling of Jack tales, details are below and here.
Get there early for a 'Jack Snack' - roast hen on a bun!
